Our needs begin to change once the aging process begins. Once you or a member of your family encounters mobility issues, it’s important to consider building a more accessible bathroom. Of course, you want it to be accessible to everyone in the home.

Capital Bathroom Renovation can turn your regular bathroom into a wheelchair-accessible bathroom quickly and easily. We build your barrier-free bathroom with safety and ease of use in mind.

Many older bathrooms and even modern bathrooms aren’t wheelchair-friendly. They need to be able to use all aspects of the bathroom easily and safely. It’s important that using the bathroom is convenient and easy to maneuver around. Everyone has their own needs so make sure to discuss the details when you talk to your bathroom contractor.

They can custom-build your new wheelchair-accessible bathroom to suit the very needs of you and your loved ones. This may include everything from wider doors, accessible bathtubs, tub-to-shower conversions, and lower or higher sinks and mirrors. Not all barrier-free washrooms are alike. Capital Bathroom Renovations understands this and we work with you to find the best solution for all your accessibility needs.

Every person using a walker or a wheelchair will have different needs. Electric wheelchairs are different from manual chairs. The design of your bathroom must be able to accommodate this. Wider doors with no threshold or rim at the bottom can be difficult to navigate. There needs to be enough room for them to enter, and completely turn around.

There should be space under the sink so they can pull right up and the toilet will need extra space around it. You will also need handrails for assistance near the toilet. Even if your bathroom is small, we can make it work. Our designers understand the dimensions and can make sure that you have a perfectly accessible washroom that works for everyone.

Looking for a contractor is already a big job, but you need to find one who has experience or specializes in barrier-free washrooms. It is important that you hire a team that understands the specifics and needs so they can design your bathroom for ultimate accessibility, safety, and comfort.

A general contractor may have a lot of experience but you want to find someone who understands what is needed in a wheelchair-accessible washroom. They need to be able to work to your specifications and your budget.

Accessible Shower Design

Another important aspect of your barrier-free bathroom is an accessible shower. The type of shower you get will depend on the needs of the person who uses it. If the entire chair needs to be able to fit in, that needs to be taken into account. There needs to be a bench or enough space to install a shower chair. The faucets should be accessible and the shower head needs to be adjustable.

Everything needs to be within reach of someone sitting down. Consider handheld showers, soap dispensers, and low shelving to store all your bathroom essentials. Accessible storage must be available for towels and other accessories. Mirrors can be lowered or tilted downward, and easy access doors can be installed that open easily or slide.

FAQs

What are the benefits of accessible bathroom renovations?

More than being inclusive for all members of your family, accessible bathrooms have increased safety features. For the elderly, approximately 80% of the accidents that happen in the home happen in the bathroom. Reducing risk leads to increased independence and comfort as well as possibly increasing home value.

What is required for grab bars or handrails?

Handrails, non-abrasive and non-slip, should be placed in several places in an accessible bathroom for the convenience of those who use them. They are usually placed behind and beside a toilet and in various places in a shower or tub. In general, they should be approximately 5 cm (2in) in diameter and handle at least 115kg (253lb) of force.

What is required for an accessible bathroom design?

More than ensuring that the shower and toilet is accessible, light switches and outlets, door handles, mirrors, and storage will need to be situated at a more convenient height. Faucets should have handles that operate with a lever style (a widespread faucet). Grab bars and non-slip flooring is a must, as well as having more than sufficient space to manoeuvre.

What should clearances be for an accessible bathroom?

Specifically for wheelchair accessibility, doorways should have a width between 81-95cm (32-37in) and a turning radius space of at least 155cm (5ft). This holds true for the main doorway into the bathroom as well as the doorway and turning radius for an accessible shower. Toilets need 150+cm (60in) of space surrounding it and should not be taller than 48cm (19in) from floor to the seat’s top.

Where can I get some more information about accessible bathroom guidelines?

The Accessible Canada Act was developed to remove barriers for those with accessibility issues in federal buildings. While it is not a mandate for private dwellings, it contains suggestions and standards for bathroom modifications for those who may not have a strong understanding of the issues faced by people with mobility difficulties.
